SS-31 (elamipretide): the mitochondrial-targeted peptide worth watching

SS-31 (also known as elamipretide, MTP-131, or Bendavia) is a four-amino-acid aromatic-cationic peptide that selectively concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane by binding cardiolipin. Preclinical work suggests it protects electron-transport-chain function under oxidative stress.
Elamipretide has completed Phase 2/3 trials in Barth syndrome, primary mitochondrial myopathy, and dry age-related macular degeneration. Results have been mixed on primary endpoints, but the compound continues to be studied and has an active development programme.
